receives Governor's Arts Award!


Kimberly Powell, KUCO's radio’s mid-day host, Director of Production and Syndication, and host and producer of KUCO’s” Performance Oklahoma,” was selected by the Oklahoma Arts Council as a recipient of the 2013 Governor’s Arts Awards, Media in the Arts category, for her contributions to the Oklahoma arts community.  Recognized largely for her development of “Performance Oklahoma,” KUCO’s weekly showcase showcasing performances drawn from concert settings across the state, KUCO's General Manager said: "In the more than five years Kimberly has been with KUCO, she has forged a new standard of quality for local programming and established strong ties between the radio station and performing arts organizations state-wide.  We are proud of her work and excited that she is receiving this award from the State of Oklahoma, an award she truly deserves.”  This is the third Governor’s Arts Award to be presented to KUCO 90.1 FM, the region’s premiere public radio station offering a classical music format.

Since 2003, the Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble has offered Oklahoma audiences a regular season of chamber music performances presented by an ensemble of musicians largely based in the Oklahoma City metro area and special guest artists.   This past June the Society presented its third annual Spring Festival, a four-concert event entitled “The Music of France."  Chamber ensemble combinations include voice and instrumental duos, trios and quartets and feature works by a range of French composers writing in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.   Performance Oklahoma presents all of this season’s Festival performances in three broadcast programs to be offered in the final three weeks of July,on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings on Classical KUCO and Saturday evenings on Classical KWTU, both evening and morning broadcasts at 8! 

Program Two

The second program of three opens with performances from Festival concert 3 entitled  “French Winds and Strings” of Syrinx for Solo Flute by Claude Debussy, the Sonata for Flute and Piano by Francis Poulenc and Camille Saint-Saëns’ Tarantella Op 6.  Rounding out the first half of the program are performances of Tzigane by Maurice Ravel from Concert 2 and the composer's Piano Trio in a minor which closed Concert 3.  Returning to Concert 1 “The French Clarinet” to open the second half, we’ll hear performances of the Andante et Allegro by Ernest Chausson and the Variations sur un air du pays d'Oc by Louis Cahuzac.  And to close the program,  we return to Concert 3 for the Trio for Oboe, Clarinet and Piano by Edouard Destenay.

Performance Oklahoma is a weekly showcase of performances drawn from concert settings across Oklahoma and is produced and hosted by Kimberly Powell in the studios of  KUCO-FM in Edmond. The program features the Oklahoma City Philharmonic's Classics Series concerts and performances from Chamber Music in Oklahoma, Brightmusic Society of Oklahoma, OK Mozart International Festival, Armstrong Auditorium, the Norman Philharmonic, the Canterbury Choral Society, the Tulsa Opera, guest artist and special concerts from Oklahoma’s universities and other series across the State.

Kimberly has met and interviewed a number of the world's leading musical artists and composers for the program including Steven Isserlis, Stephen Hough, Marc-André Hamelin, André Watts, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Nathan and Julie Gunn, James Ehnes, Jon Kimura Parker, Jennifer Koh, The King's Singers, Barry Douglas, Midori, Garrick Ohlsson, the Canadian Brass, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet, Peter Wiley, Rachel Barton Pine, Libby Larsen, Phillip Ying, Vladimir Feltsman, Michael Daugherty, Colin Currie, David Kim,
Carter Brey, Kazuhide Isomura, Eric Ruske, The Eroica Trio, Paul Neubauer and colleagues from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, members of Chanticleer and a number of exciting young international artists including Stefan Jackiw, Conrad Tao, Sarah Coburn, Shai Wosner, Julie Albers, Jennifer Frautschi, Orion Weiss, Ryu Goto, Alexander Schimpf, Susanna Phillips, Sasha Cooke, Kelly Markgraf, Andrew von Oeyen, Anna Polonsky, Alexander Sitkovetsky and the co-gold medalists of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Competition Haochen Zhang and Nobuyuki Tsujii.

In August of 2009, Kimberly and Performance Oklahoma were profiled in the Sunday edition of the Daily Oklahoman by Fine Arts Editor, Rick Rogers and in April of 2010 a feature article by Terry Clark appeared in Oklahoma's Journal Record. Her program showcasing the American Organ Institute's Gala Weekend Celebration in September 2009 was

nominated for a Governor's Award. The 2010 and 2011OK Mozart International Festival chamber music broadcast series were presented by KXMS Fine Arts Radio International in Joplin, Missouri and by KWTU Classical in Tulsa, Oklahoma.    For the past three years Performance Oklahoma has secured a grant from the Kirkpatrick Foundation and sponsorship from locally owned Homeland Grocery Stores, Hudiburg Subaru of Oklahoma and Armstrong Auditorium and in 2014, adds the sponsorship of RK Black.  In March of 2013, the program began weekly broadcast on Public Radio Tulsa’s KWTU.  And in November of 2013 Kimberly Powell was honored with a Governor’s Art Award (Media in the Arts) and received citations from the Oklahoma State Senate and House of Representatives.   In January of 2014, KUCO/KBCW began featuring Performance Oklahoma in second encore broadcasts, on Saturday mornings at 8!

Recent Program Archive



Performance Oklahoma presents the first and second editions of new series Community spotlighting classical music-making in community settings. In Edition 1 we meet John Fletcher and members of the OK Community Orchestra and hear performances from their Young Artist Concert given this past April and in Edition 2 we'll learn about the Edmond Community Chorale from Karl Nelson and chorale members and hear several performances from recent seasons.


Performance Oklahoma presents the fourth and final edition of Brightmusic Society of Oklahoma's Schubert and Friends Festival featuring two works: the first clarinet quartet of Bernhard Henrik Crusell and the Octet in F Major for strings and winds by Franz Schubert.


Performance Oklahoma presents Edition 3 from Brightmusic Society of Oklahoma's Schubert and Friends Festival held this past May. Featured in this program are performances of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, the world premiere of Quasi una Fantasia by Christopher Theofanidis and Franz Schubert's Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat Major.


Performance Oklahoma offers Edition 2 from the Brightmusic Society of Oklahoma's Schubert and Friends Chamber Music Festival held this past May. The Piano Sonata No. 13 in A Major, and the 2nd Piano Trio by Franz Schubert as well as the Grand Duo Concertante of Carl Maria von Weber with guest clarinetist David Shifrin were the featured works.


Performance Oklahoma presents Edition 1 of the Brightmusic Society of Oklahoma's four-concert Spring Festival - "Schubert & Friends" presented on May 18th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral and All Souls Episcopal Church.
