KUCO presents:

The Metropolitan Opera (the "Met") is an opera company based in New York City, resident at the Metropolitan Opera House, located at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.  It is the largest classical music organization in North America . Several operas are presented in new productions each season along with revivals of productions from previous seasons.

The operas in the Met's repertoire consist of a wide range of works, from 18th century Baroque and 19th century bel canto to the minimalism of the late 20th Century. These operas are presented in staged productions that range in style from those with elaborate traditional decors to others that feature modern conceptual designs.

The Met's performing company consists of a large symphony-sized orchestra, a chorus, children's choir, and many supporting and leading solo singers. The company also employs numerous free-lance dancers, actors, musicians and other performers throughout the season. The Met's roster of singers includes both international and American artists, some of whose careers have been developed through the Met's young artists program. While many singers appear periodically as guests with the company, others, such as Renée Fleming and Plácido Domingo, have long maintained a close association with the Met, appearing many times each season.

LA Opera returns with the broadcast of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” a romantic work based on Alexander Pushkin’s novel. The opera airs at noon and stars soprano Oksana Dyka as Tatiana and baritone Dalibar Jenis as Eugene (both pictured). KCSC’s Lane Whitesell hosts.

Tune in at noon, Saturday, June 30 for this Lyric Opera broadcast, starring American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky as Aida and tenor Marcello Giordani as Radames (pictured). George Frideric Handel’s first opera for a London audience was “Rinaldo,” was performed in 1711. Tune in at noon Saturday, June 23 to hear the Lyric Opera broadcast of “Rinaldo” starring countertenor David Daniels as Rinaldo (pictured) and German soprano Julia Kleiter as Almirena. KCSC’s Lane Whitesell hosts.

The Lyric Opera of Chicago honors a timeless classic, Jerome Kern’s spectacular production, “Showboat,” this Saturday at noon. With book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, “Showboat” follows a group of theater folk from the 1890’s Mississippi River through Chicago’s Roaring Twenties. Nathan Gunn stars as Ravenal and Ashley Brown (both pictured) stars as Magnolia in this 3 ½ hour production. KCSC’s Lane Whitesell hosts.
