The Metropolitan Opera (the "Met") is an opera company based in New York City, resident at the Metropolitan Opera House, located at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.  It is the largest classical music organization in North America . Several operas are presented in new productions each season along with revivals of productions from previous seasons.

The operas in the Met's repertoire consist of a wide range of works, from 18th century Baroque and 19th century bel canto to the minimalism of the late 20th Century. These operas are presented in staged productions that range in style from those with elaborate traditional decors to others that feature modern conceptual designs.

The Met's performing company consists of a large symphony-sized orchestra, a chorus, children's choir, and many supporting and leading solo singers. The company also employs numerous free-lance dancers, actors, musicians and other performers throughout the season. The Met's roster of singers includes both international and American artists, some of whose careers have been developed through the Met's young artists program. While many singers appear periodically as guests with the company, others, such as Renée Fleming and Plácido Domingo, have long maintained a close association with the Met, appearing many times each season.

The San Francisco Opera is back this Saturday at noon with the broadcast of Puccini’s final masterpiece, “Turandot,” starring Swedish soprano Irene Theorin and tenor Marco Berti. Also featured is Pucchini’s stirring anthem “Nessun dorma.” KCSC’s Lane Whitesell hosts.


Join KCSC opera host Lane Whitesell Saturday, August 11 at noon for the LA Opera broadcast of Puccini’s “La Boheme,” starring soprano Ailyn Perez and tenor Stephen Costello (pictured). The four-act opera follows the life of a poet who discovers true romance with a lovely, fragile seamstress among the rooftops, cafes and garrets of Paris.


Benjamin Britten’s comic chamber opera “Albert Herring” will be broadcast by LA Opera this Saturday, August 4 at noon, hosted by KCSC’s Lane Whitesell. Tenor Alek Shrader (pictured) and mezzo-soprano Ronnita Nicole Miller star.

The LA Opera broadcast of Gonoud’s “Romeo and Juliet” will be broadcast at noon, Saturday, July 21. Hosted by KCSC’s Lane Whitesell, Shakespeare’s tragedy of the two young star-crossed lovers stars soprano Nino Machaidze as Juliet and tenor Vittoria Grigolo as Romeo.
