Host/Producer Kimberly Powell

receives Governor's Arts Award!


Kimberly Powell, KUCO's radio’s mid-day host, Director of Production and Syndication, and host and producer of KUCO’s” Performance Oklahoma,” was selected by the Oklahoma Arts Council as a recipient of the 2013 Governor’s Arts Awards, Media in the Arts category, for her contributions to the Oklahoma arts community.  Recognized largely for her development of “Performance Oklahoma,” KUCO’s weekly showcase showcasing performances drawn from concert settings across the state, KUCO's General Manager said: "In the more than five years Kimberly has been with KUCO, she has forged a new standard of quality for local programming and established strong ties between the radio station and performing arts organizations state-wide.  We are proud of her work and excited that she is receiving this award from the State of Oklahoma, an award she truly deserves.”  This is the third Governor’s Arts Award to be presented to KUCO 90.1 FM, the region’s premiere public radio station offering a classical music format.

American composer David Maslanka was a special guest artist of the University of Central Oklahoma’s College of Fine Arts and Design; the composer and his works presented in a series of workshops and performances featuring UCO faculty and students, March 10th through the 13th at the School of Music, the Radke Fine Arts Theatre and Mitchell Hall Theatre.  The residency centered around the UCO Wind Symphony's performance and Oklahoma premier of Maslanka’s newly composed work “Remember Me” featuring UCO's Professor of Cello, Tess Remy-Schumacher,  Professor of Theatre Arts, Robert McGill and Director of Bands, Brian Lamb in the final of three concerts.

Internationally recognized,  David Maslanka has served on the faculties of the State University of New York at Geneseo, Sarah Lawrence College, New York University, and Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, and as a guest composer at more than 100 universities, conferences and music festivals; his music performed routinely around the world. 

In this special program. we'll hear performances of Maslanka's works offered in three concerts during his visit, as well as commentary from the composer and UCO music faculty members Brian Lamb, Tess Remy-Schumacher, David Hardman and Joshua Turner!

Performance Oklahoma is a weekly showcase of performances drawn from concert settings across Oklahoma and is produced and hosted by Kimberly Powell in the studios of  KUCO-FM in Edmond. The program features the Oklahoma City Philharmonic's Classics Series concerts and performances from Chamber Music in Oklahoma, Brightmusic Society of Oklahoma, OK Mozart International Festival, Armstrong Auditorium, the Norman Philharmonic, the Canterbury Choral Society, the Tulsa Opera, guest artist and special concerts from Oklahoma’s universities and other series across the State.

Kimberly has met and interviewed a number of the world's leading musical artists and composers for the program including Steven Isserlis, Stephen Hough, Marc-André Hamelin, André Watts, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Nathan and Julie Gunn, James Ehnes, Jon Kimura Parker, Jennifer Koh, The King's Singers, Barry Douglas, Midori, Garrick Ohlsson, the Canadian Brass, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet, Peter Wiley, Rachel Barton Pine, Libby Larsen, Phillip Ying, Vladimir Feltsman, Michael Daugherty, Colin Currie, David Kim,
Carter Brey, Kazuhide Isomura, Eric Ruske, The Eroica Trio, Paul Neubauer and colleagues from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, members of Chanticleer and a number of exciting young international artists including Stefan Jackiw, Conrad Tao, Sarah Coburn, Shai Wosner, Julie Albers, Jennifer Frautschi, Orion Weiss, Ryu Goto, Alexander Schimpf, Susanna Phillips, Sasha Cooke, Kelly Markgraf, Andrew von Oeyen, Anna Polonsky, Alexander Sitkovetsky and the co-gold medalists of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Competition Haochen Zhang and Nobuyuki Tsujii.

In August of 2009, Kimberly and Performance Oklahoma were profiled in the Sunday edition of the Daily Oklahoman by Fine Arts Editor, Rick Rogers and in April of 2010 a feature article by Terry Clark appeared in Oklahoma's Journal Record. Her program showcasing the American Organ Institute's Gala Weekend Celebration in September 2009 was

nominated for a Governor's Award. The 2010 and 2011OK Mozart International Festival chamber music broadcast series were presented by KXMS Fine Arts Radio International in Joplin, Missouri and by KWTU Classical in Tulsa, Oklahoma.    For the past three years Performance Oklahoma has secured a grant from the Kirkpatrick Foundation and sponsorship from locally owned Homeland Grocery Stores, Hudiburg Subaru of Oklahoma and Armstrong Auditorium and in 2014, adds the sponsorship of RK Black.  In March of 2013, the program began weekly broadcast on Public Radio Tulsa’s KWTU.  And in November of 2013 Kimberly Powell was honored with a Governor’s Art Award (Media in the Arts) and received citations from the Oklahoma State Senate and House of Representatives.   In January of 2014, KUCO/KBCW began featuring Performance Oklahoma in second encore broadcasts, on Saturday mornings at 8!

Performance Oklahoma presents the Meccorre Quartet, guests of Chamber Music in Oklahoma this past November and offering a program featuring quartets by Franz Joseph Haydn, Karol Szymanowski, Witold Lutoslawski and Robert Schumann. After that listeners heard previews of upcoming programs featuring violinist Gregory Lee, the OKC Philharmonic and the Dover Quartet.


Performance Oklahoma presents the Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble Winds with guest pianist Alex McDonald in works by Arnold, Maslanka, Ligeti, Françaix and Mozart! And from the University of Central Oklahoma, the newly formed Sugar Fish ensemble offered the woodwind trio by George Auric.


Performance Oklahoma presents Classics4 with the OKC Philharmonic and guest pianist Conrad Tao in works by David Diamond, Felix Mendelssohn and Sergei Prokofiev. Conrad talks about Prokofiev's third piano concerto and answers questions from five young Oklahoma pianists.


Performance Oklahoma presents harpsichord artist and builder Brad Bennight in concert and conversation, guest of the University of Central Oklahoma's Center for Historical Performance in October of 2013.


Performance Oklahoma presents the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet from Armstrong Auditorium, appearing on Monday, April 29th of 2013 in a program of works by Mozart, Francaix, Haas and Foerster.
