Sergio Monteiro

from Armstrong Auditorium!


Born in Niteroi, Brazil, Sergio Monteiro won first prize in the second Martha Argerich International Piano Competition and was selected to take part in the International Piano Academy in Como, Italy.  He received degrees from the National Music School of Rio de Janeiro and has performed in Moscow and across Europe and South America.  Awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Culture to study at the Eastman School of Music, he earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts, studying with Nelita True. 

Now based in Oklahoma, serving as the head of the piano program at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University, he appeared as a guest artist of the Armstrong International Cultural Foundation’s Performing Arts Series on Thursday, November 20th 2014 at Armstrong Auditorium. Offering a recital anchored by two masterpieces of the solo piano repertoire, the Fantasy in C Major, Op 17 by Robert Schumann and the Sonata No 3 in b minor, Op 53 of Frederic Chopin, Mr. Monteiro also offered the Nine Variations on a Minuet of Duport K 573 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Three Etudes, Op 33 by Brazilian composer and pianist Henrique Oswald, whose piano works he recently recorded for Naxos.  In this second edition of the Profiles series, Sergio Monteiro talks about his musical beginnings, his passion for teaching and the concert pieces!
