Classics 8:  A Philharmonic Gala

The OKC Philharmonic offered a gala concert marking the close of their 27th season on Saturday, May 14th at the Civic Center Music Hall in downtown Oklahoma City.  Led by music director Joel Levine, the Philharmonic presented a program showcasing the orchestra’s musicians and featuring España by Emmanuel Chabrier, William Walton’s Crown Imperial March, the West Side Story Symphonic Dances of Leonard Bernstein and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition offered in the orchestral version made by Maurice Ravel in 1922.

Tracing its roots to the city’s first professional orchestra in 1924, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic formed in 1988 with the help of dedicated civic leaders and corporations and celebrates 27 years of performances in Oklahoma City.  Under the musical direction of Joel Levine, the orchestra performs Classics, orchestral Pops, and Discovery Family concerts, as well as a variety of community engagements.
