2018-2019 Operas within Driving Distance
March 14. Wagner: The Flying Dutchman
This is a performance from last week broadcast on Sirius XM since the Met is closed through the end of March due to the corona virus problems in New York.
March 7. Mozart: Cosi fan Tutte
The Coney Island sets return from several years ago, with a new cast: Nicole Car and Serena Malfi as the sisters, Ben Bliss and Luca Pisaroni as their lovers, and Gerald Finley and Heidi Stober as Don Alfonso and the maid Despina.
February 29. Handel: Agrippina
This is the first ever Met production of one of Handel's earliest operas, starring Joyce DiDonato and a host of wonderful singers.
February 22. Mozart: Marriage of Figaro
Andrew Plachetka changes roles this spring, singing Figaro (last fall he was Count Almaviva) with young singers in the women's roles.
February 15. Massenet's Manon
This is a performance recorded last October for broadcast today. Lisette Oropesa received acclaim for her performances with Michael Fabiano as des Grieux and Kwangchul Youn as the Comte de Grieux.
February 8. Berlioz: La Damnation de Faust
This is a concert performance. From the Met's Press Release, "The decision to present La Damnation de Faust in its more usual concert version is driven by the unanticipated technical demands of reviving the Met’s staged production, which proved to be impossible to accommodate within the company’s production schedule.
The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess
This is one of the extra performances scheduled after the success of the new production last fall. At least one Oklahoman is in the cast.
December 28. Mozart: The Magic Flute
The special holiday edition of The Magic Flute, condensed to only 100 minutes playing time, so that children can enjoy it in the theater. Ying Fang and David Portillo are Pamina and Tamino.
