The broadcast of the Saturday matinee performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem opens the 2017-2018 season of the Metropolitan Opera radio series and is dedicated to the memory of Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

Thirty years before Arrigo Boito wrote the Shakespearean librettos for Verdi's Falstaff and Otello he wrote this libretto for Franco Faccio. The opera had not been produced since 1865 when Opera Southwest performed it.
