2018-2019 Operas within Driving Distance

February 22. Mozart: Marriage of Figaro

Andrew Plachetka changes roles this spring, singing Figaro (last fall he was Count Almaviva) with young singers in the women's roles.

February 15. Massenet's Manon

This is a performance recorded last October for broadcast today. Lisette Oropesa received acclaim for her performances with Michael Fabiano as des Grieux and Kwangchul Youn as the Comte de Grieux.

February 8. Berlioz: La Damnation de Faust

This is a concert performance. From the Met's Press Release, "The decision to present La Damnation de Faust in its more usual concert version is driven by the unanticipated technical demands of reviving the Met’s staged production, which proved to be impossible to accommodate within the company’s production schedule.

The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess

This is one of the extra performances scheduled after the success of the new production last fall. At least one Oklahoman is in the cast.

December 28. Mozart: The Magic Flute

The special holiday edition of The Magic Flute, condensed to only 100 minutes playing time, so that children can enjoy it in the theater. Ying Fang and David Portillo are Pamina and Tamino.

December 21. Verdi: MacBeth

Shakespeare's "Scottish Play" has its most-performed operatic version in Verdi's score. Željko Lučić and Anna Netrebko play the tragic Thane and his wife, whose ambition becomes more than her mind can handle.

December 14. Tchaikovsky: The Queen of Spades

Larissa Davidova sings the title character, actually a countess, who knows she will die if she gives up the secret of the three cards which won her a great fortune many years ago. Hermann is her granddaughter's suitor who learns that she knows the secret and wants it.

December 7. Philip Glass: Akhnaten

Emperor Akhenaten introduces monotheism to Egypt; the priests do not like it. Anthony Roth Costanza is Emperor Akhenaten. J'Nai Bridges is Nefertiti and Dísella Lárusdóttiris Queen Tye.
