2018-2019 Operas within Driving Distance
November 9. Faccio: Amleto
This is a repeat of the performance that was broadcast last year from Opera Delaware. It is a VERY different take on Shakespeare from the Thomas version of Hamlet.
2 November. Puccini: Gianni Schicchi, and Ching: Buoso's Ghost
This double bill finished out Opera Delaware's celebration of the 100th anniversary of the world premiere of Il Trittico and added a modern one-acter to fill out the double bill, loosely based on the continuing story of the characters in Gianni Schicchi.
26 October. Puccini: Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica
Last spring Opera Delaware did six one-act operas in pairs. The third act of Il Trittico was done in a separate double bill, which we shall hear next week. Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica feature Eleni Calenos as both Giorgetta and Angelica. Alissa Anderson is also double-cast, as Frugola in Il Tabarro and La Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica.
October 19. Handel: Acis and Galatea
This 2009 performance from Chicago's Music of the Baroque features Elizabeth Futral as Galatea.
October 12. Handel: Israel in Ebypt
Chicago's Music of the Baroque returns with their 2013 performance of Handel's Israel in Egypt. Jane Glover leads the ensemble with soloists chosen from Music of the Baroque chorus.
October 5. Handel: Judas Maccabaeus
When the scandals involving Placido Domingo erupted earlier this year, WFMT decided to not finish the LA Opera season and to substitute three performances from Chicago's Opera of the Baroque. Judas Maccabaeus was the Christmas concert in 2015.
September 14. Berlioz: Les Troyens
Christine Goerke as Cassandra, Brandon Jovanovich as Enee, and Susan Graham as Dido were wonderful when this performance was first broadcast two years ago.
September 7. Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin
Marius Kwiecen sings the title role with Charles Castronovo as Lenski, the friend he will kill in the second act. Ana Maria Martinez rounded out the powerhouse cast when it was first broadcast two years ago.
