2018-2019 Operas within Driving Distance

Monteverdi: The Return of Ulysses. July 7

Monteverdi: The Return of Ulysses. July 7
This production was from The Roundhouse, a smaller venue used by the Royal Opera for chamber and baroque operas. It featured Australian mezzo Caitlin Hulcup as Penelope and Roderick Williams as Ulysses.

Puccini: Turandot. June 9

Puccini: Turandot. June 9
Turandot has her suitors killed in revenge for the death of Princess Liu-Ling many years ago unless one can answer her riddles. In a production reminiscent of one which was used in Dallas 40 years ago, Turandot appears from inside a giant pearl held in the claws of a dragon. Amber Wagner is the ice Princess.

Bizet: The Pearl Fishers. June 2

Bizet: The Pearl Fishers. June 2
Bizet's little gem has had a resurgence of popularity the past few years. I've seen productions in Santa Fe, Dallas, the Met (on HD) and now Chicago presents it. Matthew Polenzani and Marius Kwiecen have the big duet, and Marina Rebeka is the chaste priestess who has fallen in love.

Verdi: Rigoletto. May 19

Verdi: Rigoletto. May 19
Matthew Polenzani is the Duke of Mantua with Rosa Feola as Gilda and Quinn Kelsey as the jester Rigoletto.

Gluck: Orphee. May 12

Gluck: Orphee. May 12
Lyric Opera of Chicago partnered with the Joffrey Ballet for the Paris (tenor) version of Gluck's opera.
