2018-2019 Operas within Driving Distance

Verdi: Atilla. August 3

Ildar Abradazov is Atilla who returns the sword that will kill him to the Odabella of Saoia Hernandez in this performance from last winter.

Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice. June 27

Countertenor Carlo Vistoli and soprano Mariangela Scilia starred in this staging of Orfeo from Last March in Rome. It is a very short production, having sacrificed some of the ballet sequences for tighter drama.

Rossini: Adina. July 20

This one-act farce about a slave girl (Adina, Lisette Oropesa) who reminds the Caliph of Bagdad (Vito Priante) so much of his lost love of many years ago that he wishes to marry her, was presented in the year of the 150th anniversary of Rossini's birth.

Giordano: Andrea Chenier. July 13

Roberto Alagna is the title character in this historically-accurate rendition of the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. Sandra RAdvonvosky and Dimitri Platanis are Maddalena di Coigny and Carlo Gerard.

Benjamin Britten: Billy Budd. July 6

This was the first time that the Royal Opera House had performed Billy Budd in over twenty years. Jacques Imbrailo is the title character with Toby Spence as Captain Vere and Brindley Sherratt as the villainous Claggart.

Verdi: La Forza del Destino. June 29

Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufman scored rave reviews as Leonora and Don Alvaro. Pictured are Anna Netrebko as Leonora and Ferruccio Furlanetto as Padre Guardiano in Act II.

Tchaikovsky: The Queen of Spades. June 22

The director of this production of Queen of Spades puts Tchaikovsky himself into the opera, letting him morph into Prince Yeletsky, who loves and loses Lisa. Vladimir Stoyanova sings the prince, with Eva-Marie Westbroek as Lisa and Aleksandr Antonenko as Ghermann, the gambler. Felicity Palmer scored a triumph as the Countess, Lisa's grandmother.

Verdi: Simon Boccanegra. June 15

Verdi's story of politics and revenge in 14th-century Genoa returned last fall to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with Carlos Alvarez as Simon Boccanegra and Ferrucio Furlanetto as his archrival Jacopo Fiesco.
