Canterbury Voices

Oklahoma City University

Chamber Choir & University Singers

Marking the start of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic’s 30th anniversary year of performances and conductor Alexander Mickelthwate's tenure as the new music director, the Philharmonic presented the first concert of the season on Saturday, September 15th at the Civic Center Music Hall in downtown Oklahoma City. Titled The Rebels, and showcasing works of three composers, not only distinctive and innovative but revolutionary in their time and practice, the program draws its energy and momentum from the powerful 9th symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven; guest soloists, Canterbury Voices and Oklahoma City University’s Chamber Choir and University Singers joining the Philharmonic for that performance.  Also featured in the program, the concert overture Le Corsair of Hector Berlioz and Passacaglia:  Secret of Wind and Birds by Tan Dun.  Maestro Mickelthwate offers his insights about these works and in the second half, Randi von Ellefson, artistic director of Canterbury Voices and Director of Choral Activities at Oklahoma City University speaks about preparing voices for the 9th symphony’s final movement.

Performance Oklahoma is heard each Wednesday evening at 8pm and Saturday morning at 8am on Classical KUCO and Saturday evening at 8pm on Classical KWTU.
