OKC Philharmonic

Classics 3 "Italian Gems"

This week we’ll hear the OKC Philharmonic with Alexander Mickelthwate in Classics 3.  Soprano Autumn West, Canterbury Voices and OCU Choirs join the orchestra to present the centerpiece work, Giuseppe Verdi’s Te Deum from the composer’s Quattro Pezzi Sacri.  To open the concert, the Philharmonic plays the Sinfonia for Orbiting Spheres by Missy Mazzoli, one of America’s leading contemporary composers who also made history last year as one of two women to be commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera.  Austrian violinist Benjamin Schmid known for both his jazz and classical performances joins the ensemble to play Nicolo Paganini’s second violin concerto, and the orchestra offers Respighi’s evocative Fountains of Rome and Gabriel’s Oboe from the film The Mission, the acclaimed cross-cultural film score by Ennio Morricone, the performance spotlighting the orchestra’ principal oboist, Lisa Harvey-Reed.
